Marketing Opportunity for CATS

By : Lila Rhoades

Typically, for every show the ambassadors shadow a DPAC employee and learn more about their task. It’s a very enriching program. For the performance of Cats, I was given the opportunity to shadow Emma, who specializes in the marketing department. After being paired up, Emma gave me a tour of the marketing office and a summary of what occurs there. I learned that she oversees the social media of DPAC and the advertisement of shows. Furthermore, she’s able to be create posters and collaborate with other employees. When asked what she enjoys most about her job, Emma said she loves “being able to be creative while working on posters.” For each play, she makes a poster that matches the theme of the show. Another aspect of marketing includes the press tables. The marketing employees set up a table adorned with envelopes addressed to reviewers. Reviewers come from the radio, WRAL, blog producers, and more. Especially because it was opening night for Cats, there was lots of activity surrounding the press tables and the preparation. It was an exciting and stimulating experience!

After visiting the community table and the President’s Club, Emma told me about one of her DPAC traditions. Since she began working there, she’s collected magnets from the various plays and keeps them on her fridge as a souvenir. While I was with her, she purchased a Cats magnet to add to her collection.

When asked what she enjoys about marketing, she answered, “I love it all. [It’s] a dream job better than I could imagine. [There’s] no other product I want people to buy than live theater.” Additionally, she added, “[It’s] very rewarding.”
