Working backstage at Hip Hop Nutcracker!

Blog By: Mahlaya Diallo

On December 28th, 2024, I went behind the scenes of The Hip Hop Nutcracker and met the crew, as well as learned how each of their jobs helps DPAC put on many wonderful shows.

I first met Brian Hunt, the Production Manager at DPAC. He gave me the tour and introduced me to everyone. Starting in the wings, I met the stage manager, Jeremiah, who calls cues throughout the show, Joe, who works in everything tech, and the Head of Audio and Sound Production, Dave, who has his own office where he monitors and fixes the audio for the show. His office had numerous screens, sound systems, and audio mixers. I also met Zach, the Head Electrician, Ginny, the Head of Props, and Les, the Head of Carpentry and the Flyman, who showed us how he used the fly rail to make the snowfall in one of the scenes.

Then, at the security door, I met Angela, who works in security. I witnessed her stop a security breach, which was cool. I also met Ken, the Head of Fire Safety.

Finally, near the dressing rooms, I met Bridgette, who works in catering, and Karen, the Head of Wardrobe.

Going behind the scenes was one of the coolest things I’ve ever done and helped me appreciate everybody who works on this crew even more. Without them, we wouldn’t be able to see so many wonderful shows at DPAC.
